Quality Art Appraisal Matters

Finding a qualified, independent, and ethical appraiser is important. The expertise, knowledge, and experience of an art appraiser you hire weigh heavily on the quality of valuation. We are academics by training, Accredited Senior Appraiser of Asian art designated by American Society of Appraisers. We defend the public trust in the appraisal profession by only offering quality art consulting and appraisal services.

No appraisal is universal. An appraisal report is required to meet a specific appraisal need. It usually serves two goals: 1) provide you or the interested party with the information needed to understand and appreciate the art object in question; 2) help you posses crucial information and achieve your goals. Either for sale, insurance coverage or claim, or make a charitable donation or file estate tax, you need to meet the industry requirements or follow the IRS rules for a "qualified" appraisal by a "qualified" appraiser.

We prepare each appraisal report with expertise, due diligence and care. Our appraisal report is informative and educational. We not only include useful information on your art work but also potential issues. A properly done appraisal report should educate you about your property and guide you to a direct approach to your goals. For sale, our up-to-date market analysis would help negotiate a fair price with the buyer from a position of strength.

We offer you quality appraisal services. We are competent to consult and appraise Chinese art of all categories (painting and calligraphy, furniture, woodblock prints, textiles, wood carvings and scholarly objects, decorative arts, and Tibetan Buddhist art, as well as some Aisan art forms (Japanese prints, screens, porcelain and Asian Buddhist art). With a scholarly focus on Chinese fine art and Asian Buddhist Art, doctoral training on Chinese art in general, we possese in-depth knowledge of Asian Art, history, languages, art market and Chinese Art Connoisseurship.

We serve you to the best of our abilities. We treat every piece of art with equal respect and offer you advice that meets your needs. With years of experience in art research and appraisal as well as more than twenty-five years of hand-on experience with Asian art works, training in Chinese art history, we are committed to all Asian artistic traditions, particularly Chinese art.

We aim to equip you with the knowlege and insights possessed by art professionals. Our appraisal reports start with identification, description and visual analysis of your art work in its historical and artistic contexts, followed by a proper ranking of the property among its equals, and ends with our comments on the value characteristics, strength and weakness of your property as compared with its equals. We structure our appraisal report to walk you through the appraisal process and help you understand the reasonings behind the final value conclusion. We comply with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and conform to the American Society of Appraisers Code of Ethics in our practice.

What Type of Value Are You Looking For?

Fair Market Value -- The price at which the property would change hands between a willing  buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts. It applies to Charitable Contribution, Estate Planning/Tax/Distribution, Equitable Distribution, etc.

Market Value -- The most probable price that a property should bring in a competitive and open market under all conditions requisite to a fair sale, the buyer and seller each acting prudently and knowledgeably, and assuming the price is not affected by undue stimulus. Implicit in this definition is the consummation of a sale as of a specific date and the passing of title from seller to buyer. It mainly applies to Consultation for Acquisition or Disposition.

Replacement Value --Replacement Value is the price it would cost to replace an item with one of similar quality purchased in the most appropriate marketplace within a limited amount of time. Usually, this is the value used for insurance purposes or collecting needs. It is evaluated in essentially three ways: New Replacement Value, when the object is still available; Second-Hand Replacement Value, reflecting the current second hand replacement cost of a similar article of equivalent quality and condition; and Facsimile Value reflecting the cost of recreating a facsimile of the original in reasonably equal material and quality of production. It often applies to the following situationos: Insurance Coverage and Claim Settlement.

Estate Tax-- Fair Market Value is used. The Estate Tax is a tax on your right to transfer property at your death. It consists of an accounting of everyting you own or have certain interests in at the date of death. The total of all of your possessions is your "Gross Estate," the base for computing taxable estates complying with IRS rules.

Liquidation Value -- Liquidation value is the price realized in a sale under forced or limiting conditions and under time constraints. It applies to Forced Liquidation, Orderly Liquidation and Salvage/Scrap appraisal. The action may be initiated by the owner or crediting institution.

Actual Cash Value -- The price be necessary to replace a property with another of similar age, quality, origin, appearance, size, and condition, within a reasonable length of time in an appropriate and relevant market. (This definition encompasses the concept of “as is” or “with or without restoration.”) It is the market value of a property less all forms of depreciation.
